kitchen stuff
There wasn't much going on yesterday, so it seemed the perfect Sunday for some long and involved baking. Anything which requires a rolling pin means that K is right there at the kitchen bench helping me. So we made these pastries- we call them 'Chelsea Buns'. I've just noticed there's a wikipedia article about them here but they look slightly different to my version.
I used to make these often as a child, and the dough recipe I had was a bit like scone dough- made from flour, baking powder and milk. But this time I used the recipe from the Edmonds Cookbook which was a proper sweet yeast recipe, and I think the overall result was less stodgy and filling. Which is a good thing, because then you can eat more of them.
So to make these, you make your dough, roll it out into a big rectangle, then spread it with a filling made from melted butter, brown sugar, spices and chopped dried fruit- i used candied lime and sultanas. Once that's spread on, you roll the dough up lengthwise, then cut slices out and place them on a greased baking tray. (I then gave them their 2nd rising because I used the yeast dough.) Then bake at 190 degrees C for about 20 mins. After cooling I made a kind of glaze from icing sugar and orange juice and drizzled that over.
Good with afternoon coffee, especially if it's raining and grey.
And still cooking-related- here are some things I made for our kitchen. This is maybe the first time we've had matching stuff in our house, but there you go. Is it sad that I find it pleasing to have matching kitchen stuff? Probably, but oh well. A linen tea towel and a pot-holder made from the Liberty babycord sent by Charlotte. Next up: perhaps an oven mitt.

Must say that your Chelsea Buns look a lot yummier than those on Wikipedia!!!

Oh.. I would love the recipe. I made some quick bread ones a week ago that didn't measure up. Those look delicious though.

Mmm! You've inspired me to bake this afternoon- with this fog and spring drizzle, I think it's just what the day needs! : )

If you are sad for having a matching tea towel and pot holder then I must be really sad, as you know I can't get enough to match in my house! Those buns look so delicious, wishing we could just pop round for a cuppa! Thanks to Tom for the email. Thanks for the baking inspiration (again), I think Milla would enjoy making those too. I'm always on the lookout for recipes that are easy and relatively tidy for her to help with (I don't really like mess in MY kitchen ;-p or messy children!

Not sad - aesthetically pleasing! And the perfect way to keep some of your favourite fabric around where you can see it everyday.

Hi! Love those chelsea buns, yours look delish! I have a scone-ish recipe for them in a Jo Seagar book, and they always turn out great. Even when you use 2x as much butter as you're supposed too. Oops. A variation we make sometimes is to replace the sweet stuff with Marmite and grated cheese. Yum!

Yum they look delish, we had them on the weekend too with the scone based recipie. We sometimes do them savory with chutney, cheese and bacon bits.

oh, chelsea buns how I love thee. Thankfully I don't have the patience to make these but I do enjoy them as a treat now and again at the library cafe (which is otherwise blah).
I only have things that match in a somewhat eccentric fashion which probably means they don't match at all. Hehe!
Your matching things are lovely.

I love your matching kitchen stuff! In fact, you have inspired me to order the "Bend the Rules Sewing" and the Lotta Jansdotter sewing books. Not that I can find the time to sew right now, but I can dream about matching kitchen stuff while everything around me is chaos. :)
Yay, you are making "fika"! I am so proud of you. :) My grandfather made cinnamon buns with me and my sister when we were small girls. I used to love the smell of baking in the house, and the anticipation of eating them when they were cool enough to touch.
Hope you are having a good time.

Yum - I love Chelsea Buns but haven't made them before. Yours look delicious. I also like matchy-matchy kitchen stuff! I have some heat-proof batting in my stash that I bought to make pot-holders and oven-mitts. Thanks for the reminder!
